10 tips for creating an outstanding banner

Banners are a great way to promote your business; especially at trade shows and events. Retractable roller banners are the ideal solution for advertising your products and/or service. They are cost-effective, versatile, lightweight and portable, making them an important asset in your marketing repertoire. People can read them from afar and up close and will be able to gauge a sense of who you are as a business at a glance. Because of this, it is important to ensure that your roller banner is designed to maximise sales and brand awareness. We’ve pulled together our top 10 tips for creating an outstanding banner below:

 1. Logo to the top

Due to the nature of a roller banner, people need to be able to see your offering from a great distance as well as up close. And the most important thing to give prominence is your company logo. It should always be at the top of the banner as this is the first place people will look.

2. Top to bottom, left to right

Following on from the logo, you want to ensure your main message comes next. The flow of your banner needs to follow the simple rule of top to bottom, left to right. It is how we are taught to read, and your roller banner should be no different. Most important information at the top with any subsequent messaging thereafter. This will ensure the information on your banner flows well. Ensure only relevant information is included as your banner is to highlight your offering without getting too bogged down in the finer details. That is what the sales team is for.

3. High quality images

Imagery and/or graphics are extremely important when it comes to roller banners; they help to add a point of interest and draw the customer in, so ensure they are of the highest quality. Images should be saved as CMYK for the best colour and have a resolution of at least 300dpi for the best pixelation, to ensure they are well received by all who view them.

4. Use colour

The use of colour is just as important. Give thought to your brand colours and how they might work well with complementary or contrasting colours. Different colours symbolise different strengths, so give careful consideration to what type of colours you are using within your roller banner design. Your logo needs to stand out the most, so make sure you pick colours that work well with this.

5. Consider typography

The font on your roller banner wants to be legible as well as aesthetically pleasing. So, it’s important to consider what fonts you already have in your remit (your logo and/or strapline) and what other fonts could work. You don’t want to overpower with too many genres, but at the same time, you want to ensure you are creating something that looks good and is easy on the eye.

 6. Choose your design aesthetic

Customers identify with different brands dependent upon their design aesthetic. Most established businesses should already have one for their brand so it shouldn’t be too difficult. But if not, consider how you want your brand to look and feel and what message and feeling you want to give off to customers.

 7. Pick the right size

Roller banner printing can come in a range of sizes, so be sure to pick the right size for you and your message. It may well depend on what it is you are trying to advertise or how you are using the roller banner to advertise. If this is your only form of marketing, then bigger is better. However, if it is a side-piece, perhaps err on the side of caution and go for a smaller size option.

8. Pair with other marketing tools

For the most part, one roller banner won’t cut it. You’ll need a few other marketing materials to support your business and your brand. Other marketing materials may consist of table covers, pop-up displays, leaflets, pop-up stands. So, give careful consideration to what you use and how all the pieces will all tie in together.

9. Experiment

Outstanding banners weren’t built in a day. You might want to experiment with a few different options and designs to see what works best for your brand and your target audience. Track their effectiveness to see which roller banners work best for you and your business.

 10. Measure effectiveness

Where possible, ensure you have a way to measure the effectiveness of your roller banner. Look at the position of your banner and ask yourself whether it generated a good amount of foot traffic. Could it benefit from a different location? Ask yourself if the banner design is consistent with other marketing collateral and whether anything needs amending. Consider how many enquiries it generated and whether the banners did their job to pull people towards your business and brand.
