A Guide To Saddle Stitched Brochure Printing

We are all familiar with, and have received at some time, printed brochures, or booklets – perhaps in the form of price lists, catalogues, magazines, calendars, or newsletters – and many of these booklets will have one thing in common – they are all presented as saddle stitched brochures! Saddle stitched brochure printing is the most popular – and cost-effective – method for binding and finishing these types of documents. This format is not just both economical and practical but can also produce very attractive brochures that look professional and high-end. Here are some aspects of saddle stitched brochure printing for you to consider:

Versatility

One of the benefits of saddle stitched brochures is their versatility – they can be created in many different formats and sizes. They are attractive and practical in either landscape or portrait style or even as a square document – therefore you can use saddle stitched brochures as a handy ‘pocketbook’ guide or for something as large as a road atlas – they can be printed to easily accommodate large images spanning two pages.

Saddle stitched brochures can be finished with appropriate hole drilling spaces for inserting into 3-ring binders – and they can accommodate a varying number of pages, depending on the type of brochure you are printing. Different thicknesses and types of paper can also be comfortably accommodated with this style, making it an ideal finish for any sized brochure.

The Cover

Saddle stitched brochure printing allows for a document to have a ‘self-cover’ – that is, all the pages printed on the exact same paper grade and weight – or, alternatively, can be printed with a ‘plus-cover’, which includes the document cover being printed on a different paper stock of, usually, heavier, and thicker paper than the main body of the document.

The Process

The saddle stitching process is based on the organisation, gathering and folding of the pages into what are known as ‘signatures’. These signatures typically contain 4, 8, 12, 16 or 32 pages – because of the arrangement and printing order of the process, all documents to be saddle stitched need to be divisible by four – you cannot produce an orderly saddle stitched brochure of an odd number of pages! Once the signatures are folded, they are fed through the saddle stitcher machinery from the bottom of the folded signature stack, into each other and are then bound, through marked fold lines, with wire staples. The innermost pages are dropped onto the saddle first with the cover signature being the last to be placed on the stack – once the stack is complete the ‘nested’ signatures are then stapled in a precision manner. The binding wire is then fed through the pages to hold the brochure together, and the document is ‘trimmed’ accordingly to produce the final attractive brochure or booklet.
